Gordon Korman’s “The Fort” was an interesting read. If you like his other books, you’re bound to like this one too.
In “The Fort,” a group of friends since elementary school come together and build a fort. It’s just a normal, everyday kid’s fort, with tarps and an alcove within a rock formation. A new kid, Ricky, comes along, and with great reluctance from all the members, is allowed to enter the fort, and at least look from outside into the inner circle of this group of friends. When they get to the fort, they find the big storm had destroyed it, completely.
Even finding a new, better fort doesn’t endear Ricky to the group of friends. They still find his time at a Magnet school insulting, until they start to see some advantages he brings to the group.
Just so you know, the new fort that Ricky discovered is AMAZING! It’s prebuilt and does almost become a character within the story. Of course, keeping the fort a secret from parents, adults, girl friend, one older brother, and his delinquent friend becomes majorly difficult.
*As a warning, this story does deal with physical abuse and divorce.
