Ground Zero

Ground Zero
It's September 11, 2001. Brandon, a 9-year-old boy, goes to work for the day with his dad . . . at the World Trade Center in New York City. When two planes hit the towers, Brandon and his father are trapped inside a fiery nightmare as terror and confusion swirl around them. Can they escape -- and what will the world be like when they do? In present-day Afghanistan, Reshmina is an 11-year-old girl who is used to growing up in the shadow of war, but she has dreams of peace and unity. When she ends up harboring a wounded young American soldier, she and her entire family are put in mortal danger. But Reshmina also learns something surprising about the roots of this endless war.

Alan Gratz has written another “must read.” This story, about the attack on 9/11, and related incidents, is something that all young people should read. We tend to forget that it happened in 2001 and at this time, that’s years before Middle School and High School students were even born. It was a sobering event that shocked the entire world. Gratz shows the life of a 9 year old boy as the boy fights for his life in the aftermath of the planes crashing into the World Trade Towers. He is caught in the building just below the burning floors and his father up on the 107th floor.

In alternating chapters, we read about many parallel life events of a young Afghan girl trying to save an American soldier from Taliban soldiers, at a great cost to her, her family, and her entire village.

In all, Gratz shows the universal need people have to survive and that revenge is something that few, if any, ever benefit from.

I highly recommend this book. I put off reading it for a couple of years because I do remember 9/11 and the pain the whole world went through, but I’m glad I finally read this book.
