Poltergeist at 140 feet below sea level, a entertaining story of the USS Mississinewa : Based on information provided by survivors and sailors (and their families), who fought the fires ignited by a Japanese suicide submarine attack, in April 2001, I led a team that located the wreck of the USS Mississinewa at the bottom of Ulithi lagoon. Ron and Bob Fulleman and their father (a crew member) were among of those contributors. In history texts major battles of WWII are most likely described in statistics and arrows depicting movement of forces on a map, individual conflicts are often ignored and emotions of combatants, forgotten. However, if we are to become interested in, and learn from history, the ability of an author to place a reader in the shoes of soldiers/sailors is critical to the understanding why battles and wars are won or lost and the effects these experiences have on the individual. Ron’s story, “Faces in the Flames”, in a very creative way, has brought this relatively obscure WWII incident to life and presented history in an interesting and emotional style to readers of all ages. The format of this true story of the Mississinewa and the fight for its crew’s survival, allows the reader to experience the emotions (ghosts) of survivor’s and the family members of those who were lost. In addition, it provides insight to the scuba diving experience and life on Ulithi Atoll. A fun way to experience history.
