The Girl in White by Lindsay Currie is definitely an MG read and no higher. I found the story about 12-year-old Mallory and her friends to be a little disappointing after having read Currie’s “Scritch Scratch.” And, maybe I have been reading and writing YA stories too long, I guess.
While the story moves along at a good pace and brings in “scary” moments, its characters seem like they should have been 18-year-olds. The responsibilities that the town puts on these kids is definitely beyond reasonable. Also, though this practice is the norm in MG books, the story doesn’t exactly hold up as to why these kids are doing what they are doing without ever talking to their parents, or someone older, who might be able to help.
I guess one thing that prevented me from liking the story more was the inadequate editing. There were at least 4 places where the wording wasn’t making sense and the reader would just have to ignore those mistakes and move on. I would have thought a traditionally published book (Sourcebooks) would have put more time and attention to the details here.
